Why Buy Beekeeping Supplies Locally

No shipping damage

Hive boxes and frames shipped from out-of-state retailers arrive cracked, racked, or with broken foundation more often than you'd think. Local pickup means you inspect every piece before you leave.

Faster turnaround

Realized you need an extra super tomorrow morning? Drive over today. No waiting on 5-7 day shipping during the season when timing matters most.

Real beekeeper advice

We use this stuff in our own operation. Ask which configurations work in Central PA winters, which foundation lasts, and what we'd skip. Big mail-order houses don't talk to you about your specific apiary.

Beekeeping Supplies FAQ

Where can I buy beekeeping supplies near Harrisburg PA?

Right here. Been's Bees stocks beekeeping supplies for pickup at our location at 670 Swatara Street, Hummelstown PA 17036 — about 15 minutes east of Harrisburg. We carry the core 10-frame Langstroth lineup (deep brood boxes, honey supers, bottom boards, inner covers, telescoping outer covers) plus hive tools, smokers, varroa monitoring equipment, and 3D-printed hive accessories.

What size hive boxes do you carry?

10-frame Langstroth equipment exclusively. Standard deep brood boxes (9⅝" tall) and medium honey supers (6⅝" tall). All boxes come with frames pre-assembled, nailed and glued, with Perco double-waxed plastic foundation already installed. Unpainted — ready for you to finish in your own colors or stain.

Do you sell complete starter hive kits for beginners?

We can put together a complete starter hive setup for new beekeepers — typically a bottom board, two deep brood boxes with frames, an inner cover, and a telescoping outer cover. Add a hive tool, a Mite EasyCheck, and a nuc or queen and you're ready for spring. Call to discuss what your specific apiary needs.

What kind of foundation comes with the frames?

All frames are fitted with Perco double-waxed plastic foundation, already installed and ready to use. Double-waxed foundation gets accepted by the bees faster than single-waxed — they draw comb on it within days when there's a flow, vs. up to a couple of weeks for plain wax-coated plastic.

Do you ship beekeeping supplies?

No. Pickup only at our Hummelstown PA location. Local pickup means no shipping damage, no waiting on transit during peak season, and you can inspect every box and frame before you drive away. We're a short trip for beekeepers across Harrisburg, Hershey, Mechanicsburg, Lancaster County, York County, Lebanon, and the surrounding region.

Do you sell queen excluders, feeders, or extracting equipment?

Inventory varies by season. We typically stock the core woodware (boxes, frames, bottoms, covers) plus hive tools, Mite EasyCheck varroa monitoring kits, queen clips, and our own 3D-printed accessories. Call ahead for specific items — if we don't have it in stock, we may be able to add it to our next order or point you to another local source.

Are your hive boxes assembled or flat-packed?

Fully assembled. Hive boxes are nailed and glued at the joints, frames are assembled and fitted with foundation. You drive away with a finished, ready-to-use hive setup — no hammer or wood glue required at home.

Why are your prices different from Mann Lake or Dadant?

Our prices are competitive once you factor in shipping costs, lead time, and the inevitable shipping-damage replacement of cracked frames or split corners. National mail-order is fine if you order months ahead and don't mind the wait. For Central PA beekeepers who need equipment this week, local pickup is usually faster and ends up similar in total cost.
